Hey, what’s up! My name is Willy Brooks. I’m a 34-year-old man who’s here to share my volleyball journey.
I was obsessed with volleyball when I was young and became a skilled player. Those were incredible years and I often analyze how volleyball benefited my life. I can’t even imagine how good my life was while playing the game.
My father is a successful businessman, and my lovely mother is a well-known therapist still pursuing her work. I’m the youngest son in the family, and my two elder sisters got happily married and have lovely and healthy children.
I married my beautiful partner, Remi, a fashion designer by profession, at the age of 25. I have a son named Jax, who was born in 2020 and is 4 years old. In 2007, my life looked entirely different from how it does now.
I was 14 years old, a young boy who had no idea what I wanted to do with my life, but now I’m a professional coach.
Early days
During my school days, I regularly watched seniors play volleyball. I felt extreme joy seeing them play, and it wasn’t until later that I realized my fascination came from a growing passion for the sport. As an introverted student, I used to cheer them but never collected the courage to join in or interact with them.
One day, when the court was empty, I got the opportunity to play. However, one of the seniors appeared and scolded me for touching the ball without permission. But my desire didn’t end with volleyball. As usual, I started going regularly and would sit quietly in the corner, watching those people playing.
A lucky day, while I was sitting the team leader noticed me and called me over. “Do you want to play?” he asked. I nodded eagerly, “Yes, I’ve wanted to play for a long time.” Several thoughts came to my mind but I kept it aside and entered the court for the second time in my life.
A Mix of Nervous and Excited
I stepped onto the court, feeling both excited and nervous. My heart raced as I held the volleyball for the first time. The sound of my classmates’s cheers filled my ears; they were just as shocked as I was when seniors offered me to play with them.
As I looked around, the court seemed so big. It felt like a dream, but I knew I had to focus. I remembered all the moves that I saw in the last few days and wanted to show everyone what I could do. With each heartbeat, my excitement grew, pushing away the nervousness.
But when the whistle blew and the game started, everything changed. I realized how stupid of me to come here to play, as they were pro players and I knew this game by watching only. Every serve, every set, and every spike felt like a chance to prove myself, but I couldn’t hit the ball for once, and finally, I ran away.
Initial Struggles
My parents encouraged me to join a volleyball club in school. At first, volleyball seemed tough. I struggled to serve, pass, and hit. The ball flew out of my hands, and I stumbled over my feet. Every spike ended in a clumsy miss, and my blocks were nowhere to be found.
I remember feeling frustrated and defeated. My coordination was off, and the timing was worse. Even simple drills became overwhelming, but I will never forget when the coach said to me “No one is born greater but takes time to become greater”.
Under his guidance, I practiced and learned everything about volleyball from top to bottom, like playing, serving, passing, holding, blocking, and hitting.
Summer was at its peak, and we were doing our regular drills when the coach suddenly came to me and said, ‘Willy, we have an inter-school tournament in the next two days in our school, and I want you to play with the team. You know what? This turned out to be the best opportunity We played our best and won the game. Later I used to play volleyball with my seniors and all my confidence was boosted to another level.
Slowly and steadily my gameplay got advanced and in 6 months only I was been selected for the Regional team. I have owned several trophies for being the best player in volleyball too.
Traveling to different countries or places for tournaments was so much fun. The excitement of playing in front of a crowd and hearing everyone cheer was amazing. Playing volleyball taught me important lessons about teamwork and never giving up attitude, which has helped me in many parts of my life.
Team Support & Success
My teammates encouraged me, offering tips and guidance. Their backing increased my confidence. I have dedicated myself to honing my skills and contributing to my team’s success.
With several years of experience, I have competed at both state and national levels, earning recognition and awards along the way. My position as an outside hitter demands precision, agility, and strategic thinking. I take pride in my ability to read the game, execute precise spikes, and motivate my teammates.
Ultimate Goal
My ultimate goal is to represent my country in international competitions, inspiring millions and making my country proud. I am committed to putting in the hard work, making sacrifices, and learning from every experience. I believe sports have the power to unite, educate, and transform lives, and I aspire to be a positive influence on and off the court.
Through my journey, I have learned valuable lessons—teamwork, sportsmanship, and resilience. Volleyball has become an integral part of my identity, shaping me into a confident, focused, and determined coach. I am excited to continue growing, learning, and sharing my passion with others making them reach new heights.
Thank you for taking the time to get to know me. I look forward to connecting with fellow sports enthusiasts, sharing experiences, and inspiring each other to maximize their gameplay.
